Philosophy
At BODY MIND & SPINE, we adjust your understanding of your body, we contribute to your wellness and your frame of mind, and we adjust your spine (and other joints).
Our body is ours. As children we learn to walk and jump and play games. Along the way, we fall and bruise our arms and legs and bump our head. The ball hits us or we get a shove and fall down. All without injuries that seem significant, most of the time.
As we grow, we work and ride and dance, and play in other ways. If misalignments aren’t corrected as they happen in our developing body, we’ll build on injuries when we join gymnastics or play sports. We may start to notice a little pop-pop sound in our back, when we twist this way and that way, a “self-adjustment” of our spine, without the skills or training of a professional to know what makes things worse.
We overdo when helping others or competing, to show how strong we are. Or just because we think we can, in a youthful belief in invincibility.
We take on physical jobs that challenge us, twisting and turning our body in awkward positions. We bear and carry children, and then lean over them and lift them and play with them. A lifetime of using our body to take care of ourselves and our loved ones, plus golfing and jazzercise---all the while, building on problems that are accumulating in our body, unless we're getting treatment to restore alignment.
Our body is such a gift! Yet wear and tear can tamper with or blemish or damage this wonderful vehicle that does all of these things we enjoy, that can help ourselves and others. Somewhere along the way, we have to decide how to take care of it.
Traditional medicine tends to focus on the symptoms presented by a patient at an office visit. At BODY MIND & SPINE, we look at a much bigger picture, considering both the forest and the trees. We look at the trees---your aches and pains and the complaints that brought you to us. And we look at the forest---the environment, your life, that has contributed to your condition.
When many people think about chiropractors, they only know about getting pain relief from having a spinal adjustment---but chiropractic treatment goes well beyond pain relief and way beyond our spine. For example, our spine is the “information highway” between our body and our mind, and it helps keep our immune system and our sympathetic nervous system in balance. Taking excellent care of our spine isn’t optional.
At BODY MIND & SPINE, what we do for the spine we do for every joint of the body. An adjustment will set any stuck joint into motion---a nudge in just the right direction. Conversely, the part of our body that "goes out" may actually be something that moves too much. Dr. Trumps helps stablilize an area that’s "gone out,” then finds the reason and the region of the body that put too much stress on the place and made it "go out.”
Sometimes there are bigger sprains and strains from our play or work, or things that come from out of the blue. For life's little emergencies, a short course of chiropractic can repair, refresh and renew. However, this isn’t a “miracle cure.” While it’s likely that you‘ll feel better within 4-6 chiropractic visits, and will feel well within 4-6 weeks, that doesn’t mean you will be well. It does mean that you’re becoming well.
The transformation to wellness---re-cultivating the “forest”---takes time. It takes time for your body to repair damage done by accident or injury or wear and tear. But you also need time to adjust your life habits, and Dr. Trumps needs time to sculpt your body to respond better to the demands you place on it. That’s why we base treatment on a 6-month plan.
The insurance system in the U.S. is currently designed to fix things that are broken. So, while there may be exceptions, plans don’t usually pay for preventative care, for treatment that could reduce long-term healthcare costs---by halting the development of problems---and could reduce days off due to illness, throughout a career---taking care of both the forest and the trees.
We’re often told that health or well-being is a state of mind. While that may relate to the benefits of positive thought, it also points to decisions that we make. A doctor can take care of your spine, but you own your body and your mind, and you’re in charge of choosing the best care for your own well-being.
Ultimately the questions become these: how good are you willing to have it and how far are you willing to go? After their personal health crises are in the past, many patients who come to BODY MIND & SPINE pay out-of-pocket for their preventative care, because they understand that this is the only body they will have, and they want it to last a very long time. And they want to feel really good throughout those years. They recognize that chiropractic wellness care is a cost effective way to provide themselves with the quality of life that they deserve, that they want for themselves and their loved ones.
